Back Up and Move Computers

Before moving computers, separate your music files, ECHO settings and library data, and the small set of Steam Cloud settings. Moving only one of these does not guarantee playback on the new machine.

The current source exposes these controls in the general settings backup area. See Settings for details; layout varies by build.

  1. On the old computer, find your original music files and play a track from one album.
  2. Copy the actual files to an external drive or the new computer. Check a few files; shortcuts and cloud placeholders are insufficient.
  3. Export settings and, if useful, create a data package or run a backup. Open the destination and confirm the file exists. Note any warnings.
  4. Install the same ECHO distribution channel on the new computer. Launch the Steam edition through Steam; do not overwrite it with the website installer.
  5. Put music in a stable location. Restore your own backup or settings, then reconnect and scan folders as prompted.
  6. Spot-check tracks, albums, playlists, likes, and history. Play a normal MP3. Keep the old computer and backup until these checks pass.

Saved library paths may fail when the drive letter changes. Locate the new folder before repairing or rescanning. Do not delete the old library just because a listed track cannot play.

Before restoring, verify the backup is yours, its date and size make sense, and the destination has enough space. Back up the new computer’s current state if it already contains important data. Steam and Community have separate data folders; current Community Pro access is free while Steam Pro requires DLC. See the edition comparison. Steam Cloud is not a full backup.

See Import Audio Sources for rescanning and Library Management for missing files.
